Most Brazilians think Neymar is innocent Poll

first_imgRio De Janeiro: Most Brazilians believe Neymar did not rape a woman who has accused him of sexual assault, a poll showed on Friday, with more than 60 percent of respondents declaring him innocent. The injured star striker has been flooded with messages of support on social media from his millions of followers as the scandal dominates headlines and conversations in the soccer-mad country, days before it hosts the Copa America. Neymar, who has strongly denied the allegations, was forced out of the tournament after spraining his ankle in Brazil’s 2-0 win over Qatar in a friendly on Wednesday. In the days after the alleged rape scandal erupted last Saturday, Parana Pesquisas asked 2,071 Brazilians if they thought Neymar was guilty or innocent of the accusation. Nearly 63 percent said he was innocent, while only 14 percent thought he was guilty of raping Najila Trindade Mendes de Souza in a Paris hotel in May. More than half of those surveyed were women and nearly 60% of them said he was innocent.last_img read more

Top EU economic powers warn US about tax plans

first_imgBRUSSELS – The European Union’s top five economies are warning the United States that its massive tax overhaul could violate some of its international obligations and risks having “a major distortive impact” on trade. In a letter to U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin, the finance ministers of Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Spain wrote they had “significant concerns” about three tax initiatives in particular. In the letter, seen by The Associated Press, the five wrote that “it is important that the U.S. government’s rights over domestic tax policy be exercised in a way that adheres with international obligations to which it has signed-up.”EU nations have been warily eyeing President Trump’s domestic tax proposals as they made their way through congress and have long expressed fears they might hurt world trade and EU companies in particular.“The inclusion of certain less conventional international tax provisions could contravene the U.S.’s double taxation treaties and may risk having a major distortive impact on international trade,” the five wrote. They specifically targeted the so-called Base Erosion and Anti-abuse Tax (or BEAT) Senate bill. This measure aims to combat what is called base erosion and profit shifting, the practice by some multinationals to avoid tax by exploiting mismatches in countries’ tax rules to artificially report their profits in countries with low or no taxes. The finance ministers lauded the measure’s aim to ensure companies pay their fair share in taxes to the U.S. But they said that under the current plans, the measures would also hurt genuine commercial deals. In the financial sector in particular, “the provision appears to have the potential of being extremely harmful for international banking and insurance business.”They said it “may lead to significant tax charges and may harmfully distort international financial markets.”The EU’s 28 finance ministers had already expressed concern about the U.S. plans during a meeting last week, but now its five biggest economies have gone ahead with their own warning. In Washington, Republicans are upbeat about finalizing the tax bill from the House and Senate versions for Trump’s first major legislative accomplishment in nearly 11 months in office.Trump has set a Christmas deadline for signing the bill into law, giving lawmakers named to a special conference committee two weeks to iron out major differences in the House and Senate versions of the legislation. The conference committee has scheduled its first formal meeting for Wednesday. Both measures would cut taxes by about $1.5 trillion over the next decade while adding billions to the $20 trillion deficit, combining steep tax cuts for corporations with more modest reductions for most individuals. Together, the changes would amount to the biggest overhaul of the U.S. tax system in 30 years, touching every corner of society.last_img read more

Counterterrorism: Trump’s Foreign Policy Advisor Highlights Morocco’s ‘Unique Experience’

Cleveland – Morocco is characterized by its “unique experience” in the field of deradicalization and counter-terrorism, Walid Phares, Donald Trump’s top foreign policy advisor, said on Thursday in Cleveland (State of the Ohio)“The Kingdom has made huge efforts in the fight against violent extremism, notably through education”, said this expert in issues related to international security, terrorism and the MENA region, during a meeting organized by the American Jewish Committee (AJC), on the sidelines of the Republican Party convention held in Cleveland since last Monday.Walid Phares stressed that the fight against terrorism necessarily involves a logic of cooperation between the United States and MENA countries, “a part of the world where Morocco enjoys a leadership position”. Phares was the director of international relations and political science at BAU International University since 2013, and he has been the provost as of 2014; he is on leave now. The Trump foreign policy analyst also served as an adviser to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. With MAP read more

Decoys remain popular with collectors

Decoy vendor and former conservation officer Bruce Malcolm, of Simcoe, says good quality duck decoys have held their value despite challenging economic times for antiques and collectibles. Monte Sonnenberg / Simcoe Reformer PORT ROWAN – Vintage decoys were a hot collectible in the local area not long ago.People were advised to scour their sheds, attics and boat houses for old decoys that saw service on the wetlands of Long Point and Turkey Point in the 1800s.Antique decoys in good shape have, for the most part, held their value. However – like a lot of antiques and collectibles 10 years ago – decoys took a hit during the global economic meltdown of 2008.That crisis forced the re-evaluation of many non-essentials in the area of art, antiques and collectibles.“The low-range decoys – those less than $100 – have dropped significantly in value,” decoy vendor Bruce Malcolm, of Simcoe, said Saturday at the Port Rowan Sportsmen’s Show and Yard Sale.“Birds that didn’t have their original paint or other issues, they lost value and didn’t recover. But the high-end decoys, they’ve retained their value.“The field is still strong. There’s still a core of collectors and new people coming on all the time. But not as many as there used to be.”The decoy market and professional producers of fine-art decoys continue to command good prices because sportsmen tend to be passionate about hunting and passionate about waterfowl. The resurgence and re-establishment of wetlands in North America in recent decades has been led by sporting groups such as Ducks Unlimited.Joe Kish of Long Point has been carving decoys since 1989. He carved a mallard hen five years ago that won an open division at a world competition in Maryland. If Kish had to sell it, he’d want about $3,500 for it.“It depends on the name of the carver,” Kish said at the sportsmen’s show. “The best carver in the world is Pat Godin of Brantford. He can get $30,000 apiece for his work. He’s like 10- or 11-time world champion in the master class. And he’s my mentor.”The Port Rowan-Long Point area has produced some noteworthy carvers over the years. The works of carvers such as Walter Bailey of Forestville, Isaiah Brown of Port Rowan and Des Johnson of St. Williams command anywhere from $100 to $500 apiece depending on condition. But the most sought-after were produced by the Reeves family – Phineas, John, Frank, Charles and Jack – between 1860 and 1980. A 19th-century goose decoy with a Reeves provenance could fetch as much as $20,000, Malcolm said.Authorities know that decoy carving as a skill and art form in Norfolk pre-dates Confederation. Col. David Tisdale was a founding member of the Long Point Company in 1866. Examples from his collection stamped DT have been authenticated and are much sought-after in the collecting community.MSonnenberg@postmedia.com read more

Adele thanks Chelsea firefighters with a tea and a cuddle after Grenfell

first_img“It’s fantastic that she stopped by to see you all,” one Facebook user commented.”I know you are back on duty today, and my thoughts are with you all. Thank you for your dedicated service, all of you!”The surprise visit comes after the Hello singer comforted those affected by the tragedy at a vigil held less than 24 hours after the blaze ripped through the 24-storey building.  A minute’s silence was held on Monday in honour of those who died, with some of the firefighters appearing close to tears during the tribute. Adele is among a number of celebrities to show support in various ways following the tragedy. On Monday, it emerged that tennis star Andy Murray is planning to donate his entire prize money at Queen’s Club this week to the families who lost everything in the fire. Adele has shown her support for the firefighters who tackled the Grenfell Tower blaze last week by popping into a fire station for a “cup of tea and a cuddle”. As the death toll from the Kensington tragedy rose to 79 on Monday, the pop star showed her appreciation for those who fought the fire by paying a visit to Chelsea Firestation.”Not everyday the wonderfully grounded and caring Adele pops into Chelsea Firestation for a cup of tea and a cuddle,” Rob Petty wrote on Facebook, alongside pictures of the 29-year-old singer posing with the firefighters. “I believe there are 79 people that are either dead, or missing, and sadly I have to presume are dead,” Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said.He said five of the dead had been formally identified and it would be a slow and painstaking task to identify the others. Because of the intensity of the blaze some may never be identified. Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp?

Le 21 novembre 2011 à 13:00 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

ASA Comments on APHIS Proposed Revisions to Biotech Regulations

first_imgThe American Soybean Association (ASA) submitted comments this week regarding the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s (APHIS) proposed revisions to biotech crop regulations. In February, APHIS announced its intent to conduct a programmatic economic impact study as part of a comprehensive study of its Part 340 regulations of biotech crops.ASA commended APHIS for undertaking this initiative, and supports the goal of updating regulations to reflect changes in the environment for the development and commercialization of the products of biotechnology.“Any changes to the regulations should be tailored to address specific problems in a clear and transparent manner,” ASA states in the comments. “In addition, APHIS must consider the potential impact of changes in its policies on the international as well as the domestic regulatory and commercial environment for biotech products.”ASA is particularly concerned by the potential for changes in our regulatory system to disrupt international trade. The U.S. government and our industry are actively encouraging foreign trading partners to adopt product-based regulatory review systems for biotech traits that are similar to our own.“This issue is critically important to U.S. soybean producers, since we export over half of our annual production and biotech traits are expressed in over 90 percent of the varieties we plant,” the comments state. “A sudden or unexpected change in our regulatory policy could prevent the introduction of new biotech products in the U.S, since nearly all countries have a zero tolerance for the presence of traits they haven’t approved. This would effectively shut down the process for developing and introducing new products.”ASA expressed support for the proposed regulatory approach that is product-based, regulates only products that pose a documented risk and is consistent with APHIS’s authority and intent to modernize its regulations and called for oversight that is transparent, predictable and proportionate to the actual risk posed.Click here to read the letter.last_img read more

Two bodies found on Mount Hood

first_imgSearch teams have reached the location of the human remains above 9,700 feet at the Reid Head Wall on the North side of Mount Hood. During an initial search of the area immediately surrounding the subject’s remains a Portland Mountain Rescue team located the remains of a second subject. The location, condition and proximity of the two subjects are consistent with two climbers missing in that area since December, 2009, Anthony Vietti and Katie Nolan. Neither subject has been positively identified. The field teams are continuing to investigate the scene and will soon begin the removal and transport of the both subjects. Positive identification will be performed by the Clackamas County Medical Examiner. The area of operations in which these subjects were located is extremely hazardous due to rock and ice fall as well as the steep terrain, loose footing and high elevation. These conditions will require extra safety measures and precautions during the long process of recovering the unidentified remains.last_img read more

Portland police arrest suspected driver in hitrun crash that killed Vancouver man

first_imgPortland police on Thursday arrested a 53-year-old man who reportedly turned himself in as the driver in a Jan. 28 hit-and-run that killed a Vancouver pedestrian, Jason Lee Grant. The Traffic Division of the Portland Police Bureau took Jim Dean Patterson of Portland to the Multnomah County Detention Center on suspicion of two counts of failure to perform the duties of a driver, according to a bulletin issued about 5 p.m. Thursday. Patterson is being held on $500,000 bail.He may face additional charges after a grand jury is convened, according to updated information provided Friday by police.Police said Patterson appeared at the Eastport Plaza East Precinct Office about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday and turned himself in.Traffic Unit investigators also released more information about the crash Thursday, saying that Grant, 26, had been walking across Southeast Foster Road from north to south near 70th Avenue, about 7 p.m., and was not in a crosswalk, when he was hit by an eastbound vehicle whose driver fled the scene, leaving Grant to die. It’s unclear why Patterson allegedly failed to stop and help Grant, Portland police Lt. Robert King said Thursday night.Investigators also discovered in Patterson’s garage a green 2000 Toyota Tacoma pickup with front-end damage that matched the description police had released before Patterson’s arrest, the bulletin said. Police earlier had told news reporters the pickup’s radiator might have been damaged in the crash, adding that they found a large amount of radiator fluid at the crash scene. As officers took Patterson into custody on Thursday, other investigators were heading for Patterson’s home to check out a tip given to the Crime Stoppers program.last_img read more

AK Eagles Up Close

first_imgPhotographer James Norman shared this picture of eagles along the Chilkat River. (Photo by James Norman)Each fall, thousands of bald eagles flock to a stretch of the Chilkat River about 20 miles north of Haines. The birds fly there for a late chum salmon run. It’s thought to be the largest gathering of eagles in the world. Dozens of people travel to witness the raptors each year, filling up almost every hotel room in Haines.Download Audio“They have a fish, two more kind of flew in eyeing it, so far the first guy has it,” Laura Ferraro said, standing on edge of the Chilkat River watching bald eagles fish for salmon. Ferraro describes herself as a “serious hobby photographer.” She has a camera on a tripod in front of her with a huge lens.“Yeah it’s probably close to two feet long so it’s pretty heavy, probably 8 and half pounds just for the lens,” she said.Ferraro is from Orange County, California. She’s visited here once before to photograph the eagles.“They’re a beautiful bird, they symbolize freedom. They’re great,” Ferraro said. “And it’s really fun getting the interactions with them here when they try to steal fish from each other.”Ferraro is not alone on this bank of Chilkat River. Half a dozen photographers are clicking away. They’re here during the Bald Eagle Festival. It’s a week-long event Haines holds each November to capitalize on the influx of visitors like Richard Barrett, who has traveled even farther than Ferraro. Barrett is an amateur photographer from the UK. He’s planning to use some of the pictures he takes here in a wildlife calendar. Eagle photographers along the Chilkat River. (Photo by John Hagen)Other people have less official plans for their eagle photos.“Making everyone else envious they haven’t been here,” Chris Klore, who traveled from Dallas with her twin sister, Michaela Davis, and their husbands Duncan and Jack, said. They’ve been planning this trip for three years. Michaela: “It sort of makes my heart beat fast, it’s so pretty.”Jack: “It’s something you don’t see in the Lower 48. You don’t see all this beauty. It’s something different for us to see.”Michaela: “It’s flat where we live. We have no mountains; we have no snow; we have no bald eagles.” Barrett: “Quite a difficult place to get here is Haines, and I’ve come a very long way to get here.”Files: “Do you think it’ll be worth it?”Barrett: “Oh yeah sure. Definitely, no doubt. All the raptors are great birds to photograph. And then here we got the fantastic mountain backdrop as well. So you’ve got a lot of ingredients to make a really nice photograph.” This year, there seem to be fewer bald eagles, because the weather has been clear and sunny and the rest of Chilkat River isn’t frozen over. But American Bald Eagle Foundation Executive Director Cheryl McRoberts says they’ve counted more than 2,000 eagles along the river. This is the 20th year the foundation has held the Bald Eagle Festival.“We have people here this year from New Zealand, Africa, England,” McRoberts said.McRoberts says 184 people registered for the festival. Throughout the week, the foundation holds eagle feedings, raptor presentations, lectures and more.Dave Olerud is the founder of the Bald Eagle Foundation. He helped advocate for the 48,000 acre Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve that was established by the state in 1982.“Every creature out there has a beautiful story to tell,” Olerud said. “And the bald eagle is a classic.”Olerud says one reason people are interested in eagles is their power.“Ancient civilizations or old civilizations what did they use to tell the story of their dominance or the power of their society?” Olerud said. “They used the eagle.”Back along the river, Dave Teeson from Whitehorse points out a group of about a hundred eagles near the water.“I think it’s rare for wildlife not to be scared of us,” Teeson said. “Most animals just avoid us so much that you just catch a short glimpse.”“But for eagles you can watch them close up for a long time they don’t care.”What many of the photographers here hope for is that perfect picture.“I got a shot yesterday I’m just thrilled to death with, it makes the entire trip worthwhile,” James Norman, an amateur photographer and retired lawyer from Virginia, said, describing the picture. “Two eagles interacting, both in the air, claws extended separated by an inch perhaps, nice spray of backlit water behind them. I’m just thrilled to death.”Norman plans to enter the shot in photography contests. The migration of eagles and photographers to the Chilkat River will continue until the end of the salmon run, around late December.last_img read more

Google is advertising for a Games Product Manager

first_imgGoogle has yet to publicly show the full breadth of its social strategy so that it can truly compete with Facebook, but the pieces are starting to come together. We’ve already seen the +1 social rating system rolled out, and now it looks as though Google is set to take a serious interest in games too.A job listing has appeared at Mountain View for a Product Manager focused on Games. The role is described as working in a brand new area of business for Google that is called “Games at Google.” The person they are looking to employ needs experience in games distribution, game mechanics, player identity, and game discovery.Social networking is mentioned specifically, and in the same sentence as “virality.” Google also wants someone who can build relationships with existing game developers suggesting Google is about to get into games in a big way, possibly starting a new social games portal, or at least better supporting them through Chrome OS and on Android.Read more at Google Jobs, via EurogamerMatthew’s OpinionGames are big business no matter what platform you are targeting. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft rely on them to sell consoles, and in the process are generating billions in revenue. At the same time the App Store is packed full of new indie titles while attracting publishers and well-known IP to the iPhone and iPad. You then have a plethora of web-based game portals, mostly dominated by Flash games. What Google’s strategy is remains unclear, but we could see something along the lines of Kongregate to begin with. Google relies on advertising for its revenue so free games supported by adverts makes sense, but hopefully with the quaility bar set very high. That can’t be all they have planned though, and games will no doubt form apart of whatever Google formulates to take on Facebook.last_img read more

The Adaptive 4D Spiral mode of the SOMATOM Definition AS is able to address functional imaging (perfusion images of blood flow over time) of whole organs. This allows Siemens to offer dynamic information of up to 27 centimeters. In the case of a stroke, physicians can use whole-organ perfusion imaging not only for a small part of the brain but for all of it.
