Mukherjee Nagar incident Two Delhi Police cops suspended for unprofessional behaviour

first_imgNew Delhi: Two Delhi Police constables were dismissed from services on Wednesday for “unprofessional behaviour” after an inquiry report into the incident in which a Sikh tempo driver was thrashed in Mukherjee Nagar area proved them at fault, police said. The accident between a ‘Gramin Sewa’ tempo and a police vehicle occurred on June 16, following which an argument broke out between the Sikh tempo driver and policemen, which soon turned out to be violent. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murderIn one of the videos, the Sikh man was purportedly seen chasing some policemen with a sword in his hand, while in another video the two constables were purportedly seen thrashing him with batons. Three policemen were suspended on June 16 in connection with the incident. However, an inquiry conducted by a senior police officer found the two suspended constables — Pushpendra Shekhawat and Satya Prakash — at fault, following which they were dismissed from services. Also Read – Two brothers held for snatchingsAccording to the inquiry report, Shekhawat, who was posted at the Mukherjee Nagar police station, had kicked Sardar Sarabjeet Singh on the upper part of his body with his shoes even after he was unarmed, and pinned down to the ground. Further, Prakash, deputed for patrolling duty in the Mukherjee Nagar police station on June 16, had also kicked Singh on his upper part of the body with his shoes while he was being dragged to the police station, the report said. The above act on the part of Shekhawat and Prakash is “unprovoked, indiscreet and highly unprofessional” and that too in full public view, such act is contrary to the training imparted to them. The use of feet and shoes to hit an already overpowered person is an “uncivil and abhorrent act”, it said.Such act by a few individuals portrays police in poor light, especially the Delhi Police, from which people have high expectations, police said.”They have been dismissed to set an example for others to learn and desist from such aggressive and unprofessional behaviour, which portrays bad image of Delhi Police. Not only these constables are likely to indulge in such acts in the future but also their possibility of influencing witnesses to gain undue favours during regular departmental proceedings is strong,” police said.last_img read more

Ancient war trail destroyed by pipeline company says Wetsuweten hereditary chief

first_imgPipeline company Coastal GasLink has bulldozed over an ancient war trail on Wet’suwet’en territory amid continued resistance from the Nation’s top hereditary leadership. Photo: Michael Toledano.Laurie HamelinAPTN NewsA pipeline company in B.C. has cleared an area of historical significance to the Wet’suwet’en Nation prior to completing mandatory provincial archaeological work near Kitimat. In a phone interview with APTN News, Na’Moks, the highest ranking chief of the Wet’suwet’en Nation’s Tsayu Clan, confirmed the ancient Kweese War Trail is located in his clan’s territory and has been partially impacted by workers on the Coastal GasLink pipeline.“The war was over the mountains with Kitimat, and when we won that war we took the crest and brought it home — we wear it on our backs,” he said.“During the training to get there, and on the way back in particular, our warriors died along that trail. How do we know that workers did not go over one of our gravesites?”Last month Coastal GasLink (CGL) announced that construction of its pipeline began in a number of places before approved Archaeological Impact Assessments (AIA) were finished, even though they are required to be in place prior to land disturbance. The company apologized to the impacted Indigenous communities and immediately suspended clearing work in the areas while an internal review and post-assessment is conducted. In a statement to APTN, CGL said they learned of the issues during an internal audit.“As part of routine quality assurance procedures, Coastal GasLink discovered that there were gaps in our Archaeological Impact Assessment coverage,” they wrote.“Once confirmed, CGL notified the BC Oil and Gas Commission (OGC) and BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) of the clearing and asked permission from the OGC to undertake a post-impact assessment of the areas to determine what, if any cultural or heritage values had been impacted.”The controversial natural gas pipeline will run 670 kilometres from Dawson Creek B.C. to a processing plant in Kitimat on the coast. There, the fracked gas will be liquefied and shipped to markets in Asia. All 20 First Nations along the pipeline route signed on with the project, but the Wet’suwet’en Nation’s highest hereditary chiefs don’t approve of the project. The hereditary chiefs say their traditional laws give them jurisdiction, not elected leadership.“This happened in the territory I am caretaker of,” said Na’Moks.Chief Na’Moks (left) and other hereditary Wet’suwet’en chiefs have taken a stand against the Coastal GasLink pipeline that is slated to run through unceded Wet’suwet’en territory. APTN file photo. The hereditary leaders of the Wet’suwet’en and Gitxsan Nations were the litigants in the land mark 1997 Supreme Court of Canada case Delgamuukw v. British Columbia, in which the SCC recognized the Wet’suwet’en traditional house and clan governance system.“Band councils, communities, they don’t have a say in this — the hereditary chiefs do,” Na’Moks continued. “And I want them to cease what they are doing.”Na’Moks recently visited the ancient war trail and says the area being cleared for the pipeline right of way is now destroyed.“They laid trees across the entire clearing and in some places they put matts over top,” he said.“One beside the other with no gaps. You can’t even go in for soil samples, make pits or do any kind of work.”But CGL confirmed corduroy matts were put in place to limit disturbance to the area. The pipeline company has not set a deadline for completion of the review, but is requesting Indigenous communities’ participation in the post-impact assessment.A cleared area of forest that Wet’suwet’en leaders say is part of an ancient war trail. Photo: Michael Toledano.“Post-impact means they have already ruined it,” said Na’Moks.“Government and industry cannot claim ignorance; we made them very aware of the trail and its significance. We wrote about it in reports back in 2014, it’s in all of our mapping, and we even ribboned it off, but they took our ribbons off the trees and knocked the trees down,” he continued.“The trail was mentioned in the Delgamuukw case.”“It seems like Indigenous rights, our culture, our spirits, where we get our names — all of our history — means nothing at this point.”lhamelin@aptn.ca@Laurie_Hamelinlast_img read more

Kohli’s RCB takes on Bumrah’s MI

first_imgBengaluru: With Jasprit Bumrah “ready and roaring” after an injury scare, Mumbai Indians would fancy their chances against an erratic Royal Challengers Bangalore when the two star-studded teams square off in the IPL here on Thursday. The big sub-plot of the contest would be the world’s best ODI batsman — Virat Kohli — taking guard against the world’s best ODI bowler — Bumrah — in a format notorious for its unpredictability. Bumrah’s shoulder injury was a cause of concern for the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai but India’s premier pacer seems to have recovered in time to be back in the fold. Both teams will be eager to register their first win of the IPL and the onus will be on Kohli and Rohit, both of who failed with the bat in their respective opening matches. Mumbai will also be boosted by the availability of Sri Lankan Lasith Malinga. Malinga was on Tuesday released by Sri Lanka Cricket from the domestic Super Provincial One-Day domestic tournament, slated from April 4 to 11. The SLC had made the tournament a trial for the World Cup squad selection, prompting Malinga to pull out of the IPL’s first leg initially. However, the SLC softened its stance, reasoning that the fast bowler will be bowling to better batsmen in the IPL. Mumbai will also heave a sigh of relief as Bumrah joined practice Wednesday during which he ran for 20 minutes and participated in catching drills. He also took to social media to state that he was “ready and roaring.” Bumrah suffered the shoulder injury after landing awkwardly while fielding during Sunday’s contest against Delhi Capitals. Yuvraj Singh will also be in focus after the 37-year-old started the season on a classy note hitting a sublime half-century against Delhi Capitals. While Mitchell McClenaghan will be eager to face the challenge of bowling to Kohli, AB De Villers and Shimron Hetmyer. RCB will expect its batsmen to put up a formidable total after they were bundled out for a paltry 70 in 17.1 overs against the Chennai Super Kings in the opening match of the season. With power-hitters like Kohli, AB de Villiers and Shimron Heymeyer in the team, that should not be an uphill task.last_img read more

Scottish farmer refuses to make way for landmark £250million film studio

first_imgNick Gibsone, an advertising executive who owns the land, wants the Telfers to leave the farm so that he can turn over his own property to the Hollywood studio development. But the two sides have been locked in stalemate for almost a year. Sources told The Guardian that any move to evict the family would have to be approved by the Scottish land court, which can rule over disputes between tenant farmers and landlords.Mr Telfer said : “I’m not moving. No, no, no. There are other places to go for the film studio.”His daughter, who lives on the farm with her mother, father and her daughter Nicolle, added: “At the end of the day money doesn’t mean anything to dad. He’d rather keep on farming and keep the farm for the community.“To lose it would be devastating, hugely to ourselves but to the community – and for something that could be built elsewhere.” A Scottish tenant farmer whose family has worked rolling farmland outside Edinburgh for more than 100 years is refusing to make way for a landmark £250million film studio.Jim Telfer, 82, said he and his daughter Mary Begbie, 52, were ready to fight all the way to the Supreme Court to thwart any bid to build on their rented 60-acre plot.Ministers have approved in principle a plan to build Scotland’s first film studio on the land in a bid to attract Hollywood stars to the country, but Mr Telfer is refusing to make way for the development. The farmhouse was first occupied by Mr Telfer’s grandfather in 1915. The family own the farmhouse and buildings, but not own the land, which belongs to the Gibsone family.Mr Gibsone said in a statement: “This has been a difficult period for all concerned but we maintain we have acted in good faith and tried our best to reach a compromise that can work for everyone concerned.“We are not a wealthy family and it is now a necessity that we sell the site which we own. A proposal has been made that would allow the tenants, Mr and Mrs Telfer, to remain in the farmhouse, with some alternative land to farm plus substantial compensation.” I’m not moving. No, no, no. Labour MPs deny spys claims they were paid £10k each by Czech

first_imgLabour MPs were paid up to £10,000 for secret meetings with Cold War spies, a former agent has claimed as he revealed they threw him a “farewell party” when he was kicked out of Britain. He has now claimed that those in Parliament who acted as informants to his secret service – the Statni Bezpecnost or StB – were paid between £1,000 and £10,000. Jan Sarkocy, a Czech spy based in London in the 1980s, says he was in contact with 15 of the party’s representatives including Jeremy Corbyn and Ken Livingstone, while John McDonnell was regularly meeting a KGB agent. State energy panel declines jurisdiction over methanol plant

first_imgOLYMPIA — A state panel that reviews large energy projects has declined jurisdiction over a methanol plant proposed for the Port of Kalama in southwest Washington. The environmental group Columbia Riverkeeper had sought to have the state Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council review the project by China-backed Northwest Innovation Works. The plant would convert natural gas to methanol, which would then be shipped to China to make plastics and other consumer goods. It would produce about 3.6 million metric tons a year.Council chairman William Lynch wrote in an order Wednesday that moving jurisdiction away from Cowlitz County and the Port of Kalama to the state agency would create delays and additional costs that would result in “substantial prejudice” to the company and the port. He dismissed Riverkeeper’s petition.Columbia Riverkeeper’s Brett VandenHeuvel says such a massive project deserves a thorough state review.last_img read more

Somethings not quite right in the new Westworld trailer

first_imgDetails have been scarce surrounding HBO’s new series Westworld–specifically on how a cult film from the guy behind Jurassic Park can translate into a 10-episode television series–but a new trailer released Monday gives us an idea of how the sci-fi drama is set to play out. It doesn’t look pretty. For those not familiar with the Michael Crichton-penned 1973 film, the trailer unveils just about everything you’d need to know to get started. We get the conceit of a virtual reality world where people go to play out their most sexual and violent desires explained to us by Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), along with a little hiccup that seems to cause the artificial intelligence inside the simulator to go rogue. We also get some introductions for some of our characters, including Dolores, a virtual construct played by Evan Rachel Wood, who’s our lead and looks to be putting the pieces together about her origins.Creators  Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy don’t look to be holding back either if the trailer is any indication. For a world filled with sin (and a series on HBO), there’s plenty of violence to go around. In the case of a universe based on the old West, there’s gun battles, horse riding, vast desert landscapes, and cowboys. Combining that with out of control AI, ethical questions surrounding those AI, and corporate dystopian imagery, it looks like an intriguing blend of old world and new. Watch the trailer below to see for yourself.Westworld is set to premiere on October 2.Check out the photos below for more images from the first season of Westworld. (John P.
