Alisson, Salah take Liverpool into last 16

first_img0Shares0000Mohamed Salah’s winner took Liverpool into the Champions League last 16 with a 1-0 victory over Napoli © AFP / Paul ELLISLIVERPOOL, United Kingdom, Dec 12 – Goalkeeper Alisson Becker was labelled a “life saver” by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp for a last-gasp save that secured a 1-0 win over Napoli at Anfield and progress to the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday.Mohamed Salah’s stunning solo effort put the hosts in front 11 minutes before half-time, but Liverpool were nearly made to pay for their profligacy in missing a series of second-half chances. Alisson had barely been tested until the Brazilian number one spread himself brilliantly to deny Arkadiusz Milik a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser and go a long way to justifying the then-world record £67-million ($85 million) fee for a goalkeeper Liverpool paid Roma in July.“If I knew Alisson was this good –- I would have paid double,” joked Klopp.“The goal Mo scored, what a goal! And the save Ali made (was) unbelievable. It was of course a life saver tonight.”Despite losing all three of their away games in Group C, three home wins at fortress Anfield were enough to see Liverpool through to the knockout stage on goals scored over the Italians in second place behind Paris Saint-Germain, who won 4-1 away to Red Star Belgrade to secure top spot.“I’m still full of adrenaline, I could feel it in bubbles,” added Klopp.“This game was just amazing. The boys played with their whole heart on the pitch.”Liverpool’s charge to the Champions League final last season was spearheaded by Salah’s 44-goal season. And after signalling his return to top form by scoring a hat-trick in a 4-0 win at Bournemouth on Saturday that sent Liverpool to the top of the Premier League, Salah’s 13th goal of the campaign relegated Napoli to the Europa League in the new year despite losing for the first time in Europe this season.“It’s a real shame our efforts haven’t been rewarded,” said Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti.“We have no regrets. Overall the group of players have done extremely well, we took it down to the wire.“You can’t expect to come to Liverpool and create 10 really good chances, we had one or two and didn’t have the luck to take one of them.”– Van Dijk’s lunge –The outcome could have been very different if Virgil van Dijk had been sent off rather than just shown a yellow card that will keep him out of the first leg of Liverpool’s last-16 tie for a dangerous lunge on Dries Mertens after just 15 minutes.UEFA will introduce the video assistant referee (VAR) system for the last 16, but Ancelotti bemoaned the delay in using the technology during the group stage.“Seeing on the video, I knew it was a red card,” added Ancelotti. “When VAR comes in (to) the Champions League, it is too late.”Liverpool took control as the first half wore on and broke the deadlock when Salah outmuscled Mario Rui and skipped past Kalidou Koulibaly before squeezing the ball underneath Ospina from a narrow angle.Had Liverpool conceded they would have had to win by two goals due to their 1-0 defeat in Naples, and the hosts failed to cash in on their dominance of the early stages of the second half and avoid a nervy ending.Salah pulled his shot into the side-netting with a far better angle from the one he scored, while Milner and Van Dijk sent long-range efforts flying just wide of the target.Ospina made acrobatic saves to keep out Salah and Mane once more before Mane failed to hit the target with two glorious chances to Klopp’s dismay.Napoli should have levelled 12 minutes from time when Jose Maria Callejon spooned over a glorious chance at the back post. But their best opportunity came at the death only for Alisson to stand tall to keep a 12th clean sheet in 22 appearances and ensure Liverpool live to fight another day in the Champions League this season.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Michael Carrick (Manchester United) – Like Terry, manager uncertainty is putting the breaks on a new deal for Carrick, although expect the 34-year-old to stay at Manchester United, regardless of who is in charge in the summer. 11 7. Martin Demichelis (Manchester City) – At 35-year-old Demichelis is coming to the end of his career, and with competition from Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala – plus whoever Pep Guardiola recruits – the Argentine is unlikely to stay beyond the summer. 11 11 11last_img read more

CONFIRMED! Arsenal announce signing of 20-year-old Bolton defender Rob Holding

first_img Rob Holding has become Arsenal’s latest summer signing 1 Arsenal have confirmed the signing of England Under-21 defender Rob Holding from League One side Bolton. The 20-year-old came through the ranks at Bolton before breaking into the first team 12 months ago, and went on to immediately establish himself in the side.Wanderers finished bottom of the Championship last season as they dropped down to the third tier, but that did not stop Holding picking up the club’s player of the season award.Details of the move first leaked weeks ago, but Arsenal finally announced the deal on Friday, and although both the fee and length of contract have remained undisclosed by the club, it is reported he cost in the region of £2million.Versatile defender Holding, who made two appearances for the England U21 squad which won the Toulon Tournament in May, is the Gunners’ third summer signing, following Granit Xhaka and Takuma Asano in moving to the Emirates Stadium. It remains to be seen if he will be involved with the first team straight away, however.Bolton tweeted their gratitude to the player following confirmation of the deal.“Everyone at #BWFC would like to thank @RobHolding95 for his efforts during his time with the club, and wish him well in his future career,” Bolton posted on their official Twitter account.Arsenal’s own statement on Holding’s signing closed with confirmation the Gunners “remain in the market” for new players, with further attacking options the most likely target before the close of the window. However, chief executive Ivan Gazidis on Friday cast doubt on fans’ hopes of the club making any more signings this summer.last_img read more

FUNERAL DIRECTOR THINKS BALLYMACOOL LAND WILL SORT GRAVE SHORTAGE OF BURIAL SPACE

first_imgA funeral director has issued an urgent appeal for Donegal County Council to purchase a plot of ground for a new cemetery at Ballymacool Woods in Letterkenny.Undertaker Charlie McClaffertyThe three plots of ground comprising of a total 82 acres is now on the market on behalf of the owner who’s reported to have purchased the site from receivers, Price Waterhouse Coopers.Charlie McClafferty, Churchill told the Tirconail Tribune that it is imperative that the Council purchases some or all of these lands because Letterkenny is fast running out of spaces in all its graveyards and in ten years there will be a huge problem finding suitable burial grounds.Mr. McClafferty who is well versed, as an undertaker says that it is vital that Donegal County Council comes along and buys this land regardless of price because the town urgently needs to plan for new graveyards in the years ahead.Charlie McClafferty told the Tribune: “Letterkenny’s churches all have serious issue with lack of space in their cemeteries and nowadays we also have non-faith and humanist funeral services and nowhere to accommodate these demands around Letterkenny. The fact that so much ground has come on the market in Ballymacool Woods gives Donegal County Council to solve the issue in the long term and I can only hope our local Clllrs will bring pressure to bear on the Council to buy this site.”The three plots of ground are on lands zoned for development and was formerly the property of McWilliam Homes from Northern Ireland before it was taken over by Anglo Irish Bank who appointed PCW as receivers. McWilliams had planned to construct an out of town major development of 555 residential houses, crèche, retail units, health centre and office facilities.Expressions of interest have now been sought on behalf of the owner by the firm of Sherry, Rainey, Fitzgerald in Letterkenny.FUNERAL DIRECTOR THINKS BALLYMACOOL LAND WILL SORT GRAVE SHORTAGE OF BURIAL SPACE was last modified: May 14th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Google Adds Place-Ranking System, Should Yelp Be Afraid?

first_imgA few months ago, Google rolled out Place Pages with the lofty vision of creating a Web page for every place in the world. In addition to a map-view of local businesses, users can access hours, transit stops, reviews and geo-tagged photos. As of today, the company is offering a color-coded ranking system for specific aspects of a businesses’ services. The question is, does the new feature mark the beginning of the end for restaurant review sites? While Yelp gives reviewers a chance to rank a business on a scale of one to five stars and Foodspotting ranks individual dishes, Google’s new ranking system aggregates comments from across the web based on specific keywords. At a moments glance, users can quickly view a restaurant’s food and service in relation to its ambiance and atmosphere. Even the smallest business with little to no web presence can produce useful results. For example, the comments at San Francisco’s El Metate Taqueria were enough to produce a ranking on salsa alone. In late November, ReadWriteWeb covered the launch of Google’s map-based coupon program where mobile users can access deals through Place Pages. Coupled with the fact that you can save your search results to your favorite maps, users may find fewer and fewer reasons to visit location-based review sites. In your opinion can Google oust Yelp and Citysearch as the leader in business reviews?
