Louis van Gaal labels Man United star as ‘very coachable’

first_imgManchester United manager Louis van Gaal has described Anthony Martial as ‘very coachable’ after the French teenager’s exhilarating start to life in the Premier League.United raised more than a few eyebrows with the £36m they parted with to prise the 19-year-old away from Monaco, but four goals in as many games means he has already gone someway to justifying the fee.The sizeable sum made Martial the most expensive teenager in transfer history, but Van Gaal believes his pupil has the application to maximise his potential at Old Trafford.“He is an open guy, he is listening, watching and he is focusing on the matches so that I can see so for a manager he is a very coachable player and that is also why I like him and I bought him,” he said.Van Gaal also revealed that Martial is still settling into life in his new environment, particularly as the player and his young family are still living in temporary accommodation.“He is still living in a hotel so he is in the first phase of his adaptation, also for his wife and his kid,” Van Gaal said.“That is also important because that shall have an influence also.“We shall have to see how he settles into an apartment. Then his wife is alone with his kid. Then he is coming back. Then he has to do shopping or something like that.“Now he is only living in a hotel, coming to the training session and eating with the players, train and prepare for matches.“The big step is when he settles himself and his wife in a new environment.” 1 Anthony Martial last_img read more

Chelsea team to play Dynamo Kiev today – formation and starting XI!

first_img 11 26. John Terry (centre back) 11 Dynamo Kiev v Chelsea is live on talkSPORT.Chelsea travel to Ukraine on Tuesday night, where Dynamo Kiev will be looking to heap further misery on the faltering west London giants in the Champions League.  Following their previous defeat in the competition to FC Porto, the Blues require no less than three points at the NSC Olimpiyskiy, and while their confidence will no doubt have been lifted after their victory, and clean sheet, over Aston Villa at the weekend, their performance remained far from convincing. And, as to now be expected, Jose Mourinho altered his line up at Villa Park, dropping Eden Hazard, Nemanja Matic, Oscar and Gary Cahill – further fuelling suggestion that the Portuguese manager is facing a battle with the Chelsea dressing room.Such has been the constant changes in personnel over the past few weeks, that predicting Mourinho’s line up has become one of the most challenging at present. Will Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic start on the bench again? Will Ruben Loftus-Cheek be handed an opportunity from the off in Europe? Who will fill the No.10 role?In attempt to target such questions, talkSPORT has put together an XI that we think the Blues boss could field.Take a look by clicking the yellow arrow above, right. 11 6. Ibrahimovic has been linked with a move to Manchester United. 11 11 11. Steve Mandanda (Olympique Marseille) – Another goalkeeper linked with Liverpool in January to replace Simon Mignolet. Mandanda announced last month that he would see out his contract with Marseille before seeking a new start in the summer. 9. Joel Matip (Schalke) – Centre back Matip is almost certainly leaving Schalke this summer with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool looking the most likely destination. The Reds face competition for the Cameroon international’s signature from a number of Europe’s top clubs, however. 11 3. Victor Valdes (Manchester United) – Having left his “nightmare” at Newcastle behind last January, Ben Arfa has been in sparkling form for Nice, scoring 11 goals and becoming an internet sensation with his remarkable skill. A host of big clubs have now been alerted to his talents and his availability. 8. Ever Banega (Sevilla) – Banega has struggled to reach a new deal with Sevilla and as a result it looks like the Argentine playmaker is on his way out of the club. He has most recently been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with Manchester United reportedly preparing a £3.5m-a-year deal. January has come and gone and those players who didn’t get their move will have to wait until the summer to start talking to clubs again. However, those who are out of contract at the end of the season are free to negotiate their exit now, and there are some star names available. With the price tags of players continuing to rise, there are a few bargains to look out for in the free transfer market. talkSPORT looks at 11 of the best players available to move for nothing during the summer.Click the arrow above, right, to see who which of Europe’s top bargains could be on their way to your club. 11 6. Mathieu Flamini (Arsenal) – Flamini’s ‘lucky charm’ tag at home expired last month with defeat to Chelsea, and now he could be without a club in summer. Arsene Wenger and Arsenal are yet to offer the Frenchman a new contract. 11 2. Hatem Ben Arfa (Nice) – Having left his “nightmare” at Newcastle behind last January, Ben Arfa has been in sparkling form for Nice, scoring 11 goals and becoming an internet sensation with his remarkable skill. 11 4. John Terry (Chelsea) – Will he stay or will he go? Terry’s contract situation at Chelsea is at a standstill at the moment, with the incoming manager, whoever he may be, likely to have the final say on the former England captain’s future. 11 10. Ezequiel Lavezzi (Paris Saint-Germain) – Lavezzi has been linked with a move to Chelsea for the majority of this season and is due to be out of contract at the end of the season. However, his is the latest name to attract interest from China and he could move to Shanghai Shenhua this month. 5. Michael Carrick (Manchester United) – Like Terry, manager uncertainty is putting the breaks on a new deal for Carrick, although expect the 34-year-old to stay at Manchester United, regardless of who is in charge in the summer. 11 7. Martin Demichelis (Manchester City) – At 35-year-old Demichelis is coming to the end of his career, and with competition from Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala – plus whoever Pep Guardiola recruits – the Argentine is unlikely to stay beyond the summer. 11 11 11last_img read more

‘Felipe Anderson to make £47million Man United move in summer’ – Lazio president

first_img Lazio star Felipe Anderson 1 Manchester United will sign Brazilian starlet Felipe Anderson in the summer for £47million, according to Lazio president Claudio Lotito. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford during the January transfer window, but he ultimately remained in Rome as a deal failed to materialise. The Serie A side’s sporting director Igli Tare recently claimed they rejected a €50m approach from United last summer, insisting they wanted more money for the rising star.“We turned down a €50m (£37.6m) offer from Manchester United on August 27 and nothing has changed since then,” he said. “He’s worth much more.”And it appears the Red Devils upped their bid, with Lazio president Lotito revealing the clubs have agreed a deal for around £46.9m.“Felipe Anderson will move to Manchester United next season, for €60 million,” he told Italian football news outlet Calciomercato.“I bought Felipe Anderson for €8million, and I’ve already sold him on for €60 million.”Anderson is tipped for a big future and made his debut for the Brazil national team last year. The winger has scored seven goals for Lazio so far this season, having found the net 11 times last term.last_img read more

GLENTIES BUSINESSWOMAN FUMING OVER SMOKING BAN SNUB DURING MACGILL SUMMER SCHOOL

first_imgA pub owner who welcomed Government Ministers and other VIPs to Donegal’s famous MacGill Summer School this week is fuming after she was told she is facing a €5,000 for not having a proper smoking area.Carmel Doherty of Keeney’s Bar in Glenties was left outraged after she was hit with the fine and told to close her smoking area on Thursday afternoon. The same smoking area has been operating at the pub for the past 10 years and has been visited by numerous environmental health officers who passed it. Ms Doherty said her pub has been visited by hundreds of summer school devotees over the years including playwright Brian Friel, former RTE boss Dr.Joe Mulholland, Dr Garrett Fitzgerald and former Tanaiste Mary Coughlan. The theme of this year’s summer school, which ended yesterday (FRI) was ‘The first 100 days – The next Five years.’However Ms Doherty said the country is now being strangled by legislation when small business should be encouraged. The businesswoman has also been serving sandwiches and baguettes to MacGill Summer School crowds but was also told to stop because her kitchen was too small. The bar does operate both a food and drinks license. She became so angry that she put a sandwich board outside her premises to protest at the fine. The sign reads “No Food Served Here today due to over regulation.”Ms Doherty said she and her husband are not sleeping because they are trying to find ways of getting the money to pay the €5,000 fine.“Just up the street we had the Taoiseach and Government Ministers trying to find out ways of getting the country back on track. “And here I am being fined up to €5,000 because of fussy laws when I am trying my best to get by.“I have just paid a VAT bill of more than €4,000 and it’s no secret that pubs are struggling to get customers in.“This smoking area has been passed by numerous health environmental heath officers over the years but now they claim it is not good enough and have said I am facing a €5,000 and ordered me to close it down,” she said. She added that she now had no choice but to tell her customers to smoke outside the front of her bar. “Glenties was the first national winner of the National Tidy Towns competition and it is a beautiful town.“But my customers will be left with no option but to stand out at the front door and throw their cigarette butts onto the street when we have a perfectly proper smoking area out the back.“For me that just doesn’t make sense and it’s bureaucracy gone mad,” she said.A spokesperson for HSE West said they do not comment on individual cases but that all smoking areas are governed by legislation and conditions introduced in 2004.(Pictures by kind permission of Sean McHugh)EndsGLENTIES BUSINESSWOMAN FUMING OVER SMOKING BAN SNUB DURING MACGILL SUMMER SCHOOL was last modified: July 30th, 2011 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:CARMEL DOHERTYKEENEY’S BARMACGILL SUMMER SCHOOLlast_img read more

Kante and Payet get France call-ups but Manchester United star misses out

first_imgFrance coach Didier Deschamps has called up West Ham playmaker Dimitri Payet and Leicester’s midfield enforcer N’Golo Kante for friendlies against Holland and Russia but there was no room for Karim Benzema.Deschamps called talk of a recall for Real Madrid striker Benzema “tiring”.“I’m here to select and I will select. Everyone is free to have an opinion,” Deschamps said. “There are two people who will decide: my president (French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet) and me.”French newspaper Le Parisien had earlier reported that Benzema would be absent from the squad, citing Le Graet as its source, meaning his absence was expected on Thursday.Benzema has not been part of Les Bleus’ set-up since October’s friendly against Armenia, after which he was questioned by police in connection with an alleged blackmail plot against international team-mate Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape reportedly showing the Lyon midfielder. The 28-year-old was released from custody but was ordered not to have any contact with Valbuena, effectively ruling him out of contention for Deschamps’ squad. That restriction was rescinded last week, since when speculation has surrounded Benzema’s potential return.Valbuena was absent from the latest France squad too, with Deschamps considering the Lyon player unfit for international duty.Payet has shone in the Premier League for West Ham, while uncapped Kante has helped to drive Leicester to the brink of winning the English title.Kante took the place of Manchester United’s Morgan Schneiderlin in Deschamps’ squad.“N’Golo Kante is putting in high-level performances,” Deschamps said, in a press conference shown on fff.fr.As for Schneiderlin, Deschamps added: “It’s not that I don’t have confidence in Morgan, I know what he can do, but before making final decisions (on the Euro 2016 squad) it’s important that N’Golo comes with us to get more answers.”France squad for friendly matches against Holland on March 25 and Russia on March 29:Lloris, Mandanda, Costil; Sagna, Jallet, Evra, Digne, Varane, Koscielny, Sakho, Mathieu; Pogba, Matuidi, Diarra, Sissoko, Kante, Cabaye; Griezmann, Martial, Giroud, Coman, Gignac, Payet. VARDY DROPPED? ‘I’d play Vardy, Kane AND Rooney against Russia’ – Dean Ashton

first_imgDean Ashton has told talkSPORT ‘questions will be asked’ over Roy Hodgson’s team selection if England fail to perform and record a victory in their Euro 2016 opener against Russia on Saturday. The Russians have been hit with a string of injury problems ahead of the game, giving England a great chance to get their European Championship campaign off to a bang. But reports on Friday suggested that Jamie Vardy will be dropped from the starting XI, despite being one of the nation’s most in-form strikers.Vardy hit 24 goals for Premier League winners Leicester this term, and has netted three goals in eight appearances for England. But after a disappointing display against Portugal, which saw the Three Lions win 1-0 but fail to really combine as a team, Hodgson is considering reverting back to his favoured 4-3-3 formation with a selection of his trusted and proven players. It means Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling, who has struggled to shine in his first season at Manchester City, are likely to come back into the side against Russia. But former England striker Ashton believes Hodgson should be full throttle in attack and really take the game to the struggling Russians. When asked about the Vardy reports, the ex-West Ham frontman told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “It doesn’t surprise me, but if it’s true, to me that would be a little bit…not deflating, but I was hoping we’d go with two strikers.“Especially against Russia; I don’t think there’s anything to fear against them and I would have loved to have seen us really go out in this first game and really attack, to see if they can cope with the youth and legs in our team.“There will be questions asked.“[Hodgson’s team against Portugal] baffled me a bit. We had strikers chasing down full-backs, and that’s the last thing you want to see.“In all the England games we’ve seen so far [in the build-up to the Euros], I think they have shown that Roy has really struggled with the formation he’s going to play and what team he’s going to play.“I’m excited about how the team looks, I like the youthfulness the energy we’ve got.“I would play Rooney, Kane and Vardy in this first game, I really would.“I’d really go and try to attack Russia, and Rooney is big part of that. Rooney is the type of player who, when we need a goal, can produce something.“It might be a free-kick, it might be something special, it might be a threaded pass that nobody else sees. I just think he’s still got that quality, and that’s why I’d have him in the team.”last_img read more
