His new book Super Mind opens the door to peak performance through Transcendental Meditation.According to Dr. Rosenthal, Transcendental Meditation is a powerful tool for overcoming stress — even severe PTSD — and enriching all areas of life. In Super Mind, he weaves the latest clinical research together with the results of over 600 personal interviews he conducted to define the Super Mind state, which is achieved by meditators through their regular practice. They sought (and many achieved) an expanded state of consciousness that enabled them to excel in their careers and relationships and become “super performers” like well-known TMers Hugh Jackman, Arianna Huffington, Barry Zito, Katy Perry, Jerry Seinfeld, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Martin Scorsese, Cameron Diaz, and Russell Brand.“I thought I’d shared all I had to say about TM in Transcendence, but I was very wrong. The personal growth continues to unfold in terms of success and synchronistic good luck accompanied by inner happiness and peace. It feels like the perfect antidote for the craziness that’s all around us!” Dr. Rosenthal says.Norman E. MLA Davies returning to Fort St John Wednesday to heal from injuries

first_imgFORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Peace River North MLA Dan Davies says he’s going to be discharged from Vancouver General Hospital on Wednesday, just eight days after being seriously injured in a workplace incident in Fort St. John.Last Tuesday, Davies was injured in an incident at Inland Concrete in Fort St. John where he has worked on and off since 1995. The Peace River North MLA explained that he was offered a four-hour morning shift while meeting with the company’s owners during the three week break of the spring session of the BC Legislature.“As MLA, I think it was my second shift in a year,” said Davies. “ I would call it far from moonlighting.” He said that he had booked several days off to spend time with his family, and that the incident did not conflict with his duties as MLA. “This would be no different than if I were to go anywhere and get into an accident, or fall off my bike or while skiing,” clarifying that the sole difference is the involvement of Worksafe BC. Davies said that the accident at Inland occurred while he was putting together metal concrete forms, when he was struck by a jib and chain attachment that was installed on a front-end loader. He explained that the end of the jib struck Davies on the back and drove him into one of the forms. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation. When he picked up by BC Ambulance Service Paramedics, Davies was transported to the Fort St. John Hospital before being airlifted to Vancouver to receive further treatment. He said that he suffered from several cracked vertebrae, along with some issues to his kidneys. After receiving treatment in Vancouver for the past week, Davies said that his doctors told him after lunch today that due to his rapid progress in recovering so far, he’ll be getting discharged from Vancouver General Hospital on Wednesday before flying back to Fort St. John that night. Davies added that he’ll be spending the time to heal properly at home for the next few weeks, and hopes to be back in the Legislature by next month.last_img read more

Pandya, Rahul needed the rap on their knuckles, says Shastri

first_imgNew Delhi: India’s head coach Ravi Shastri says Hardik Pandya and K L Rahul needed “rap on their knuckles”, referring to the duo’s sexist comments on a popular TV show. Pandya and Rahul were in the eye of a massive storm following their sexist comments on a chat show in January. “Pandya and Rahul needed the rap on their knuckles. They would have learnt a lot from what happened, which is good,” Shastri said. “You are bound to make mistakes and you are bound to be punished at times but that’s not the end of the world. Such experiences just help players to come back stronger, harder and wiser,” he said. Also Read – Dhoni, Paes spotted playing football togetherThe TV show was aired on January 6. In the show, Pandya and Rahul talked about their relationships, crushes, favourite movies, actors and actresses. Pandya boasted about hooking up with multiple women and even spoke about how open he is with his parents on the matter. Shastri was asked about the differences in opinion between the BCCI and the team over partners of cricketers travelling with them on long overseas tours. “The players know if it is going to affect their performances they will take the decision accordingly. When you see the amount of time they spend away from home, you got to be practical there. “But yes, if it is big event like a world cup or a big tournament where you need the boys to be absolutely focused 24×7 then it’s different but otherwise — this day and age you got to be practical and be a little open minded.” Shastri also said that there is immense mutual respect between captain Virat Kohli and his predecessor Mahendra Singh Dhoni.last_img read more

Moroccan jailed for 20 years over death of child housemaid

first_imgRABAT – The employer of a 14-year-old Moroccan housemaid who died after suffering severe burns was jailed for 20 years on Thursday by a court in the southern city of Agadir, an NGO said. The victim, identified only as Fatima, died last March after suffering third degree burns to her hands and face, with the case causing public outcry over the exploitation of domestic child workers in the North African country. The employer, a woman, was found guilty of “blows and injuries unintentionally leading to death” and handed the maximum jail term of 20 years, said Omar Saadon, from the NGO Insaf, who was present at Thursday’s hearing. “We were expecting this ruling, because the proof was overwhelming,” he told AFP.“But beyond that, we will continue our campaign until a new law is applied that eradicates this scourge.”Moroccan labour laws prohibit the employment of anyone under the age of 15 and requires authorisation for anyone under 18, although the national planning commission says that, despite improvements, there are still more than 90,000 children under 15 in work.In its annual report published this week, Human Rights Watch said girls as young as eight continued to work in private homes for up to 12 hours per day, and for as little as $11 (eight euros) per month.“In some cases, employers beat and verbally abused the girls, denied them an education, and refused them adequate food,” the New York-based rights group said.last_img read more

Ohio State synchronized swimming aims to win honor memory of former Buckeye

Members of the OSU synchronized swimming team compete in the U.S. Collegiate National Championships on March 28 at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyes clinched their 29th national title in program history.Credit: Lantern File PhotoThe Ohio State synchronized swimming team is continuing its quest for a second consecutive national championship and 30th overall on Saturday by competing in the Jessica Beck Memorial, its final home meet of the season. The Buckeyes, who finished first out of four teams in their season-opening meet, the OSU Invitational, are set to host another three opponents at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion: Michigan, Miami (Ohio) and Wright State. After starting the 2016 season on a good note, the Buckeyes are hoping to keep their successful ways going. The team has previously been successful in the Jessica Beck Memorial, winning nine consecutive times. The Buckeyes have several members of their 2015 national champion squad competing, including junior Emma Baranski.Baranski had a major contribution to the Buckeyes’ win in their first meet this season by sealing a victory in both a solo routine and a duet alongside teammate, Monica Velazquez-Stiak.“Team unity is a large contributing factor to the success of the team,” Baranski said. “Before we swim, we come together and do a big team cheer. Throughout the entire meet, whether you are swimming a duet, a trio or a solo, you are staying with your team.”Along with the unity of the team, Baranski said the team’s general hard work is key in its ability to win.“Before competition, we train even harder,” Baranski said. “We push ourselves every day because we are striving for perfection.”OSU coach Holly Vargo-Brown stressed the importance of that conditioning, saying all the unity in the world can only get you so far if you’re not up for the task at hand physically.“At this point of the season, it’s really a competition against yourself,” Vargo-Brown said. “Are you going to remember what you are supposed to be doing? Are you going to be there for your teammates?“We are just making sure that we are doing the work that we have prepared for.”Baranski emphasized the importance of home meets and how the energy of the crowd benefits the team.“Synchronized swimming isn’t a popular sport around the country, but at Ohio State we have so many fans,” Baranski said.“There is so much support and it is absolutely amazing.”Unfortunately for the team, Saturday’s meet marks just its second and final one in Columbus this season. As a result, the team’s two seniors, Amrian Johnson and Julia Toro, are set to be honored before the meet as part of the traditional senior day festivities. While winning is a goal, there is a deeper meaning going into the weekend’s event, which began in 2007 to honor Jessica Beck, a former OSU synchronized swimmer who died in September 2005. Beck, who was a 21-year-old senior at the time of her death, passed away in her sleep. The cause was later found to be acute cardiac arrhythmia, an irregular heartbeat. “I think when we swim at this meet it is not just about winning,” Baranski said. “It is about being a part of something bigger than ourselves and the opportunity that we have to swim together every single day.”The Jessica Beck Memorial is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. read more

Often students were told to declare a disability that would require they be given extra time, often a second day, to complete the exams.— Bribing college coaches or athletic administrators to make it appear the students were athletes being recruited to the school, including creating fake athletic credentials.— Having someone take classes in the place of a student and using those grades on applications.Between 2011-2018 prosecutors allege parents paid the consultant $25 million to bribe coaches and college administrators to designate their children as student athletes or member of other groups given favored admission status. Prosecutors say payments were often disguised as charitable donations that were then funneled to the coaches and administrators.Prosecutors say the consultant represented to parents that the scheme had worked successfully more than 800 times.Attorney Gretchen Von Helms joined KUSI News to discuss the latest college admission scandal. Face Up Edutopia

first_imgWhile the cover design may seem to be a simple hunting-and-gathering of stock images, Edutopia’s challenge was to convey a broad issue through the style and shape of three letters. “Vanity Fair, we’re not,” says Edwards. “We’re dealing in some 40-plus editorial pages, which makes it difficult to cover all of the ground we want to. Therefore, the cover needed to imply both traditional and technological arts. That’s why we came up with the lettering.” An earlier iteration put “ART” totally in computer keys, but the magazine wanted to expand its scope beyond writing and technology. The final design—a paint splash to represent the visual arts, a retro typewriter key and a trumpet for music education—struck the right chord for Edutopia. “This cover was adventurous for us, and we’ve received a tremendous reaction from educators,” says Edwards. “This is a topic that teachers of all sorts worry about.”DESIGNERS’ COMMENTS“My eye jumps around the page, not sure where to look first. The color and letter graphics compete, and putting the masthead/nameplate in a different color from the headline may solve part of this problem. The word ‘Soul’ works in yellow, but I’d like to see another color for the masthead. The ‘A’ is a bit distracting compared with the other two clean letter graphics, making the left side of the page feel lopsided and heavy. The ‘A’ could be made from paintbrushes to make the lines cleaner, and even out the weight of the elements. Despite this, Edutopia’s cover is a creative way to tie in art, writing and music. The decks are written and organized well, and the masthead/nameplate is strong.”Stacy Vickroy | Art Director | Wise Group“This was a great way to merge three disciplines into one visual element. Unfortunately, the same color applied to the logo and ‘Soul’ creates a disconnect in the headline. If the color had been used on the deck instead of the word ‘Soul,’ it would have further unified the headline. The cover is well-balanced, and eliminating an equal amount of copy lines would generate space to lower the head and deck to create a clearer logo/headline distinction. Overall, this is a visually playful cover that communicates the cover story.”Ana Paula Rodrigues | Art Director | Convenience Store News | Nielsen Business Media Have a unique “cover” story? He and creative director Laura Morris wanted to create a print cover for the magazine’s special report on the advantages of an arts education. “We wanted to cover as broad of a spectrum as possible with this ‘ARTS’ typeface,” says Edwards.Morris searched to find the right letters, shapes and objects to go on a white background. “When we chose the best combination, it wasn’t difficult to piece together in Photoshop,” she says. “Typically we stick to bright colors that pop.” The content, and a white background cover, lent themselves to a broad color palette. “Still, everything needed to match,” Morris adds.last_img read more

REMINDER Wilmington Community Fund To Give Away Reusable Tote Bags On June 23

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Community Fund is helping residents reduce waste by helping to protect the environment in a more sustainable day-to-day effort. Their reusable tote bags offer many environmental benefits, as well as convenience, value and ease! The Wilmington Community Fund wants to help by giving away reusable bags (1 per person) at the following locations on Sunday, June 23, 2019, starting at 10am:Elia’s Country StoreFarmers Market (140 Middlesex Avenue)Lucci’s SupermarketMarket Basket PlazaThe giveaways are on a first-come, first-serve basis.Be sure to bring your Wilmington Community Fund tote bag on your next grocery trip. While you’re there, consider donating a non-perishable food item to the Community Fund’s Food Pantry. With your help, WCF can achieve its motto, “People Helping People.”Facts on Reusable Bags vs. Plastic & PaperPlastic, disposable shopping bags equate to nearly 2 billion bags tossed away every week across the country. In a typical landfill, it can take centuries for a plastic bag to decompose. Sadly, recycling costs are high, with the EPA reporting only about 2% of all plastic bags are recycled. Since they are lightweight, plastic bags also have a high risk of blowing away and harming sea life, birds, and other animals, either through consumption or entanglement. Switching to paper bags is not necessarily a better alternative as they take previous natural resources and produce twice the atmospheric waste as plastic.Reusable Bag Tips:Keep reusable bags by your door or in your vehicle.Make “bring reusable bags” a line item on your shopping list.Wash cloth bags once a week in hot water and soap, air dry before storing.Bags aren’t just for groceries! Facebook Facebook Dating users can now use the social network to make the love connection in more countries.Facebook on Thursday said it had added Mexico and Argentina to the list of countries where its matchmaking service is offered. The dating service launched in September for users in Colombia, with later expansion to Canada and Thailand. The social networking giant also gave a preview of some new features users can expect in the near future, including one that appears to be designed to address safety concerns. All the information in the new profile can be edited and removed before its creation, and users can still opt to create their own profile from scratch. The free service, which Facebook unveiled last May during its F8 developer conference, differs from competitors Tinder or Bumble. Instead of swiping left or right to register your interest or lack thereof in potential matches, you scroll through another user’s profile and tap if you’re interested. But Tom, on the other hand, has remained single.Katie Holmes is spending most of her hours with her daughter Suri but Tom Cruise has reportedly not been in touch with Suri ever since he and Katie got divorced. According to a recent report, the real reason why Tom Cruise cannot get in touch with his daughter is because of his religious beliefs.According to Us Weekly, Suri is not being raised as a Scientologist by her mother Katie Holmes and as everyone knows, Tom is an ardent believer of The Church of Scientology. As per the laws of the Church, the Vanilla Sky movie star is not allowed to see Suri or communicate with her. US gunman targeting Jews kills 11 in Pittsburgh synagogue

first_imgAn ambulance departs the Tree of Life synagogue following shooting at the synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US on 27 October. Photo: ReutersA gunman yelling, “All Jews must die,” stormed a Pittsburgh synagogue during Saturday services, killing 11 worshippers and wounding six other people including four police officers, before he was arrested.Robert Bowers, 46, of Pittsburgh, was taken into custody after a shootout with a SWAT team. Federal prosecutors charged him with 29 criminal counts including violence and firearms offenses, and violating US civil rights laws.”The actions of Robert Bowers represent the worst of humanity. We are dedicating the entire resources of my office to this federal hate crime investigation and prosecution,” US attorney for western Pennsylvania Scott Brady told reporters.Earlier, US attorney general Jeff Sessions said federal prosecutors could seek the death penalty.FBI special agent Bob Jones said the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is leading the probe, said the crime scene was the worst he had seen in 22 years with the FBI. He said he believed Bowers was acting alone, adding: “We have no knowledge that he was known to law enforcement before today.”KDKA television cited police sources as saying Bowers walked into the building and yelled “All Jews must die.”Bowers had made many anti-Semitic posts online, including one early on Saturday. In another, he slammed US president Donald Trump for doing nothing to stop an “infestation” of the United States by Jews.Jones said Bowers was armed with an assault rifle and three handguns. He said authorities believed the suspect entered the synagogue, murdered the worshippers and was leaving when he encountered a uniformed police officer. The pair exchanged gunfire, Jones said, and Bowers re-entered the building before a SWAT team arrived. After a shootout, he surrendered.Bowers was taken to a hospital where he was listed in fair condition with multiple gunshot wounds. Victims taken to area hospitals included a 61-year-old woman, a 70-year-old man, and a 55-year-old officer. No children were killed, authorities said.Three police officers were shot and one was injured by shrapnel, authorities said. Two of the six people injured were in critical condition.Raging against ‘Invaders’A social media post by Bowers on Saturday morning said a Jewish refugee organization, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, “likes to bring invaders in that kill our people. I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.”The comment was posted on Gab, a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based social networking service created as an alternative to Twitter. In a statement, Gab.com confirmed the profile belonged to Bowers and also said it had suspended the account and contacted the FBI about it.The mass shooting prompted security alerts at houses of worship around the country. It follows a spate of pipe bombs found mailed in recent days to prominent political figures, mostly Democrats including former President Barack Obama. The Tree of Life synagogue in the city’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood, a heavily Jewish area, was holding a Shabbat religious service at the time of the shooting.Police are normally only present at the synagogue for security on high holidays, Michael Eisenberg, former president of the synagogue, told KDKA.”On a day like today, the door is open, it’s a religious service, you can walk in and out,” he said.Around the time, three congregations amounting to about 100 people would have been using the building, Eisenberg said.Shortly after reports of the shooting emerged, Trump said in a tweet he was watching what he described as a “devastating” situation.Trump told reporters later that the killings might have been prevented if there had been an armed guard in the building.”If they had some kind of a protection inside the temple maybe it could have been a much more different situation, they didn’t,” he said when asked if there was any link to US gun laws.He also called the shooting a wicked act of pure evil, called on Americans to rise above hate, and ordered US flags at the White House and public buildings to be flown at half-staff. He said he would visit Pittsburgh, but did not say when.In the city on Saturday night, mourners held a candlelit vigil for the victims under light rain. The Islamic Centre of Pittsburgh offered its deepest sympathy and condolences, and called on its community to donate blood. The Anti-Defamation League and Jewish Council for Public Affairs described it as the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the history of the United States. On 13 April, 2014, a pair of shootings occurred at a Jewish Community Centre and a Jewish retirement community, both located in Overland Park, Kansas. A total of three people were killed in the shootings. In 2015, a white supremacist murdered nine African Americans during a prayer service in Charleston, South Carolina. In 2012, a neo-Nazi gunman with white supremacist ties walked into a Sikh gurdwara – or house of worship – in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, and murdered six Sikh Americans.last_img read more
