One Voice. One Team. One Sport – Respect and Conduct at Touch Football Events

first_imgOn the eve of the 2016 Harvey Norman National Youth Championships, TFA CEO, Colm Maguire has distributed a timely reminder to players competing at the event and across the wider Touch Football community. Aligned to the Play by the Rules framework and TFA Code of Conduct, the communique serves as an important signal to participants to ensure that officials are afforded due respect at our national events and outlining the commensurate behaviours expected of players.Maguire said it was through his own observations at different events the express need to impress on participants the strong position on expectations.“Our referees are participants in our national events in their own right and are there to do the important job of officiating to the best of their ability,” he said.  “Given the environment and the nature of the way we participate in a closed setting, they are constantly in a position where they can be interacted with or given what would loosely be termed ‘feedback’.“It is my view that this constant judgement or questioning is not something I believe is a positive environment for the referees; nor is it a positive behaviour for our coaches.“Any change needs to start somewhere and I can think of no better place than ensuring our youth and states competing this coming week are clearly aware of what is and isn’t deemed acceptable,” he added. â€œThey can then also assist to help drive the attitude shift and indeed be our advocates of change. The message to all participants outlines that no referee should be open to ongoing engagement or constant feedback; particularly from Coaches on the sideline or during the game. Moreover, the only engagement or interaction with officials is post-game and must be in a positive/constructive and informative manner – not judgemental. Any other communication by the playing group is through the captain only, as per the rules of the game.Maguire added: “In order to make lasting change and foster a conducive environment of respect for the pivotal role our referee group plays, we need to start by communicating expectations…and then demonstrating and living them at the national and indeed every level.”Related LinksOne Teamlast_img read more
